My family and I spent Memorial Day weekend on Long Beach Island, NJ. Along with beautiful beaches, LBI has several cool antique shops, and over Memorial Day weekend it is also know for having many yard sales. We stopped by a few antique stores and we bought several 19th century advertisement cards and postcards. We also picked up two 1949 Philadelphia Phillies v. Brooklyn Dodgers baseball programs featuring many hall of famers in the scorecard lineup, including Jackie Robinson.
My favorite card was an ad for the1879 W.W. Cole's Great New-York and
New Orleans Circus promoting the attraction of the Worlds Tallest Man
and Woman - Martin Van Buren Bates and his wife Anna Swann. Capt. Bates and his Wife were a huge attraction of the time, previously headlining for P.T. Barnum's circus. They still hold the Guiness record for the tallest couple.
The yard sales didn't yield any good findings, but I did find a nice farmhouse style dollhouse with many vintage collectible miniatures - did I mention I also enjoy collecting miniatures? - it's an interest I enjoy and share with my Grandma.
We visited an Art Show - it didn't have any antiques, but we picked up a great idea for using vintage postcards to decorate/collage items such as frames, mirrors, handbags and boxes. My dad and I are going to try it out with and old mirror frame we picked up. I'll share the pictures when we are done.
Finally, on the way back from the art show we stopped by the best yard sale of the weekend. Unfortunately we were in a rush and could only browse for a few minutes, but I did pick a large album full of stamps from around the world (for a few bucks) and a 1963 team photograph of the Yankees.
